On our way west to Portugal we made stops at Avila and Salamanca, Spain. Just like many cities I've visited in Europe, these small cities/ towns had their own cathedrals. There's usually an open main square and the cathedral is near by with its stained glass windows and fancy arches.
Avila was cute with its quiet alleys. The main part of the town was surrounded by a wall 2 km long with towered corners.
We climbed the steps to walk the wall and we were greeted with roof tops views.
Salamanca was a bit bigger with a university and a strip of fancy shops as well as a its own cathedral. The Plaza Mayor or main plaza there is the largest square in Spain. We had a break for lunch and had tapas at a bar there. We also finally found a bank with reasonable exchange rates.

We crossed the border at Guarda which is a town known to have the highest elevation in Portugal. Then we came down to the valleys of Serra de Estrela to Coimbra where we stayed over night.
More to about Portugal in the next few days!
